Tairawhiti Rising Legends

Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti is pleased to introduce Tairawhiti Rising Legends, an initiative aimed at recognising, acknowledging and supporting the development of talented athletes within Gisborne Tairawhiti, a region that has a very proud sporting history. The programme aims to assist talented athletes in fulfilling their potential and gaining higher honours.

Tairawhiti Rising Legends will utilise Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti management, the backing of the Gisborne corporate sector, and an advisory group made up of Cory Hutchings, Leigh Gibbs, Grant Bramwell, Raipoia Brightwell and Sue Croskery. Tairawhiti Rising Legends will assist selected aspiring elite both financially and developmentally via mentoring, development workshops and a $1000 scholarship for 2007. Much of the value of the initiative will come from New Zealand Academy of Sport through utilising the same experts that work with New Zealand's sporting elite. These sessions will also cater for the coaches of selected athletes.

"Growing up in the Gisborne Tairawhiti region shouldn't be a disadvantage. In the professional sports era the ability to offer cutting edge technologies and practices will provide our aspiring elite a financial and developmental edge in becoming the next crop of Gisborne Tairawhiti legends."

Cory Hutchings - 3 Time World Ironman Champion

Support will be provided for athletes in the programme who move out of the region to pursue their sport and education. Links and opportunities generated by introducing the athlete through appropriate networks such as Tertiary providers, National Sports Organisations and other Regional Sports Trusts will assist the transition to a new city. Tairawhiti Rising Legends management will also give continued support where appropriate. The success of Tairawhiti Rising Legends will largely depend on the willingness of the community to assist our future sports stars through sustainable funding that helps these committed individuals realise there potential and fulfil their dreams
