Pathway to Podium is a national programme, developed by Sport New Zealand. It is designed to support and encourage future sports stars throughout the country.
The programme is not open to nominations. Athletes are selected to participate by national sporting organisations, such as Swimming New Zealand. Pathway to Podium is run in partnership between Sport New Zealand, High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ), 14 HPSNZ targeted national sporting organisations and 14 regional talent hubs around the country, including Sport Gisborne Tairāwhiti.
The programme is designed to prepare athletes for their future, in or outside of high performance sport. It is a regionally based programme which aims to give athletes the support they need within their community. This means that the athletes get to stay here in Gisborne surrounded by the support of whanau, family and friends, while still getting access to high performance services and opportunities.
In 2016 three local athletes were selected to participate. Swimmers Matt Scott and Olivia Corrin (pictured) nd Kayaker Quaid Thompson.
